Introduction

Nexplanon/Implanon (contraceptive implant)

The Nexplanon is a very effective form of contraception, which lasts up to 3 years. 

Please have a read of the following information, to ensure the Nexplanon is the right form of contraception for you.

Please have a read of the following possible risks and side effects prior to attending your contraception appointment. It is important to read the points carefully: 

  • Very rarely, people can have an allergic reaction to  the local anaesthetic or the Nexplanon.
  • There may be some bleeding, bruising or a scar from the insertion of the Nexplanon.
  • As there will be a small open wound, there is a low risk of developing an infection. Please aim to keep the wound dry and clean after the procedure, to minimise the risk. 
  • There is a very small risk of failure (less than 1 in a 1000) as this is a very effective form of contraception.
  • Approximately one in three people will experience irregular periods
  • A further one in three people will experience no periods 
  • Some people may experience hormonal side effects- these include mood changes, acne or greasy skin

A prescription for the coil will be sent to your nominated pharmacy. Please ensure you collect this before attending your appointment. 

 

Nexplanon/Implanon removal

Please have a read of the following risks and side effects ahead of your appointment for your Nexplanon removal:

  • Very rarely, people can have an allergic reaction to  the local anaesthetic or the Nexplanon.
  • There may be some bleeding, bruising or a scar from the removal of the Nexplanon.
  • As there will be a small open wound, there is a low risk of developing an infection. Please aim to keep the wound dry and clean after the procedure, to minimise the risk. 
  • If no additional contraception is used thereafter, there is a high possibility of pregnancy. 

If you are not wishing to continue with a form of hormonal contraception after your Nexplanon is removed, please abstain from sex 7 days prior to your appointment.
