Introduction
  • The copper coil is an incredibly effective form of contraception. The coil is popular as it does not contain any hormones. There are different types of copper coils available. We commonly use the copper coil which lasts for up to 10 years, but there are five year coils available.
  • The following link gives more information about the device. Please ensure you read this before your appointment,

Please have a read of the following possible risks and side effects prior to attending your contraception appointment. It is important to read the points carefully:

  • Some people experience discomfort or cramping during insertion. This often settles very quickly, usually within a day.
  • Occasionally, the fitting can make you feel dizzy/light headed. Rarely, people can faint after having the procedure done
  • Infection- The risk is highest in the first 3 weeks after fitting. If you are concerned you may be at risk of a sexually transmitted infection (such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea), please get checked before having the coil fitted. Please avoid wearing tampons for the first 10 days after fitting to minimise this infection risk (tampons are fine to use thereafter).
  • Expulsion or change of position is rare (up to 1 in 20 - highest in first year). If the coil is expelled (comes out), you will be able to see it.
  • Failure. No form of contraception is 100% effective – this method is over 99% effective.
  • Damage to cervix or womb including perforation. There is a 1 in 1,000: risk of womb perforation; this risk is six times higher if you are breastfeeding. This risk is mostly at the time of coil insertion.
  • Ectopic pregnancy if pregnancy occurs – the risk of pregnancy is extremely small. However, if pregnancy were to happen, there is an increased risk of this being a pregnancy of the tubes (ectopic pregnancy). It is therefore important to always do a pregnancy test if your period is delayed.
  • Periods can be heavier and more prolonged
